After the success of American remake of The Ring, Sony Pictures had green-lit an American remake of Ju-On: The Grudge. Shimizu, the writer and director of the original film, was hired to direct the film, from a screenplay written by Susco. Principal photography on the film began on January 26, 2004 and wrapped in July 2004 in Tokyo, Japan. The Grudge was released in North America on October 22, 2004, by Columbia Pictures. The film grossed $187 million against a $10 million budget. On its opening weekend alone, the film grossed $39 million, becoming the first horror film since House on Haunted Hill (1999) to top the Halloween box office and, until the Friday the 13th remake in 2009, had the highest grossing opening weekend in history for a horror remake. [3] The film was followed by two sequels, the theatrically released The Grudge 2 (2006) and the straight-to-video The Grudge 3 (2009). A sidequel, also entitled The Grudge, taking place concurrently with the events of this film and its two sequels, was released in 2020. Plot [ edit] The Grudge describes a curse that is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage or sorrow. The curse is an entity created where the person died. Those who encounter this supernatural force die, and the curse is reborn repeatedly, passing from victim to victim in an endless, growing chain of horror. The following events are explained in their actual order; however, the film is presented in a nonlinear narrative. The Saeki Family [ edit] Kayako Saeki, a housewife living in suburban Tokyo, is in love with college professor Peter Kirk, obsessively writing about him in a diary. Her husband Takeo becomes jealous as he discovers the diary and believes that Kayako is having an affair with another man. Takeo brutally murders her, their young son Toshio, and the pet cat Mar in violent rage. After Takeo hides the bodies in the house, Toshio's ghost hangs him. After receiving a letter from Kayako, Peter visits the Saeki house only to find both her and Takeo's corpses along with Toshio's ghost. Shocked, he flees the scene and kills himself the next day. The remainder of the Saeki family rise again as ghosts due to the curse, notably Kayako, who appears as an onryō ghost. The Williams Family [ edit] A few years later, the Williams family from America move into the Saeki house. While Matt is thrilled with the house, his wife Jennifer and dementia -ridden mother Emma feel uncomfortable. Matt and Jennifer are quickly consumed by the curse. Yoko, a care worker, arrives at the house to find Emma alone before she encounters Kayako, who drags her up into the attic. Karen Davis [ edit] Concerned about Yoko's disappearance, her employer Alex sends another care worker, Karen Davis, to take over the care of Emma. At the house, Karen discovers Toshio sealed up in a wardrobe and later on witnesses Kayako's spirit descending from the ceilings to claim Emma. Alex arrives at the house shortly after and finds Emma dead and Karen in a state of shock. Alex calls the police, with the presence of Detective Nakagawa. In the attic, Nakagawa and his partner Igarashi find Matt and Jennifer's bodies, along with a human's lower jaw. Meanwhile, Matt's sister, Susan, is pursued by Kayako around her office building. At home, Kayako attacks her and she vanishes. While leaving work, Alex is killed by Yoko's jawless corpse. Kayako begins haunting Karen, who informs her boyfriend Doug of the situation. Karen researches the house, eventually confronting Nakagawa, who explains that three of his colleagues investigating the Saeki deaths were all consumed by the curse. That night, Nakagawa carries gasoline into the house in an attempt to burn it down, but is killed by Takeo. After learning that Doug has ventured to the Saeki house to look for her, Karen races there. She finds Doug paralyzed and attempts to flee with him. Kayako crawls down the stairs and latches onto Doug, who dies of shock. As Kayako closes in, Karen sees the gasoline and ignites it. Karen survives and in the hospital, she learns that the house also survived the fire. Visiting Doug's body, Karen realizes that she is still haunted by Kayako. Well the first Grunge was set in Japan and was pretty spooky, this one looks like it will be too. Thought this one is spelled Grudge instead of Grunge but they both have those creepy people like characters in it. Watch the grudge online. Don't go to this movie with high expectations. If you're expecting something like 2004 remake, you won't be satisfied. However, if you keep your expectations low, you'll get a solid horror flick. Honestly, I really liked this movie and I prefer it more than 2004 remake. I don't understand all the hate this movie is getting. Yes, it did rely too much on cheap jumpscares and it definitely needed more character development, but there were some really disturbing scenes and great performances. Overall, this was a solid horror movie and I liked it, and I think it was definitely better than that awful The Grudge 3.

What a shame. I was really hoping that this "reboot" even though it alledgedly takes place between 1 & 2) wouldn't suck. The trailers intrigued me and I always thought the Grudge series (Japanese & American) was an interesting premise even though they weren't all that good.
However this movie is just a fat cleveland steamer for anyone looking for good scares and had high hopes that this movie might give reboots (especially horror reboots) a good rep. All the 'scares' were shown in the trailer, it was a sad excuse for a horror movie. If EVERY SINGLE SCARE wasn't an ear drum rattling jumpscare I would've fallen asleep in the theatre.
I was so excited to see the Grudge get a supossedly hard R rating for what was supposed to come across as gore but all of it was just so uncreative and disapointing. Not to come off as a "horror purist" but jumpscares are single handily ruining the horror film genre and this movie is a grade A example why. br> The ONLY redeeming thing about this movie was towards the latter half where Lin Shaye's character was in the kitchen chopping on a cutting board and it was revealed that she was chopping away at her fingers. Even though (as I said before) that scene was spoiled in the trailer watching it in the theatre made me pretty uncomfortable for a moment, especially when Jacki Weaver's character discovered that she murdered her husband right before.
Save your money & your time and avoid this trainwreck snooze fest.

S původní sérií to má společné snad jen poněkud kostrbaté napojení na Japonsko a temné vrčení, ale jinak se víceméně jedná o klasickou duchařinu s prokletým barákem, jehož kletbě propadne každý, kdo do něj strčí nos. Zpočátku jsem měl problém se stylem vyprávění o několika časových rovinách, ale to si po chvíli sedlo a nakonec to dalo i nějaký smysl. Strašidly se tu nešetří a i když jejich masky nejsou kdovíco, jejich nástupy fungují, stejně jako lekačky. U herců jsem byl trošku na rozpacích. Andreu Riseborough mám rád, ale nejsem si úplně jist, že se pro podobnou roli hodí a ani John Cho není tím typem herce, kterého bych tady čekal. Naopak bez Lin Shaye by se to asi neobešlo. Výrazný problém jsem měl s vizuálem, který je protivný až hnusný a film dost sráží. HORROR! Už prvý US remake Ju-on stál za prd, dvojka ho prekonala, a teraz tu máte korunovačný klenot. A pán Raimi má ďalší tlstý čierny puntík. Dúfam, že si celé to martýrium užil aspoň pes "Frank" - najlepšia "postava" vo filme. ( fiLLthe3DD) Režisér čerpal insipraci z filmů Vymítač ďábla (1973) a The Changeling (1980). Rovněž uvedl, že je velkým obdivovatelem série Ju-On.
