Der Film folgt zwei Soldaten der British Army, die 1917 als Meldegänger an der Westfront einen dringenden Befehl in die vorderste Linie bringen sollen. Der Film ist so gedreht und geschnitten, dass sich die Handlung wie in Echtzeit abspielt, auch wenn es sich nicht um einen echten One-Shot-Film handelt. Bei der Oscarverleihung 2020 gewann der Film die Preise für die beste Kamera, den besten Ton und die besten visuellen Effekte. Darüber hinaus erhielt er weitere sieben Nominierungen, unter anderem als bester Film, Mendes für die beste Regie und gemeinsam mit Krysty Wilson-Cairns für das beste Originaldrehbuch. Handlung [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Die Handlung spielt im Frühjahr 1917 während des Ersten Weltkrieges im britischen Sektor der Westfront im Norden Frankreichs. Zwei britische Soldaten, die Lance Corporals Will Schofield und Tom Blake, erhalten den Befehl, eine dringende Nachricht an Colonel Mackenzie zu überbringen. Dieser steht kurz davor, mit dem II. Bataillon des Devonshire Regiment einen Angriff auf die Deutschen zu unternehmen, die sich nach seiner Kenntnis auf dem ungeordneten Rückzug befinden. Unterdessen hat die britische Heeresführung durch Luftaufklärung erfahren, dass es sich bei diesem Rückzug um eine Finte handelt ( Unternehmen Alberich). In Wahrheit geht das Deutsche Heer auf die Siegfriedlinie zurück und erwartet dort in bestens ausgebauten Stellungen den britischen Angriff. Somit ist der Angriff von Mackenzies Bataillon zum Scheitern verurteilt, von den 1600 Männern würden vermutlich nur wenige überleben. Blakes Bruder dient als Lieutenant in dem Bataillon, daher ist dieser äußerst motiviert, den Befehl zum Abbruch des Angriffs rechtzeitig zu übermitteln. Als sie die deutschen Schützengräben erreichen, stellen sie fest, dass der Feind tatsächlich abgezogen ist. In einem unterirdischen Schlafsaal, den sie durchqueren, haben die Deutschen eine Sprengfalle hinterlassen, die durch eine Ratte ausgelöst wird. Bei der Explosion brechen Teile der Befestigung zusammen, Schofield wird verschüttet, kann aber durch seinen Kameraden gerettet werden. Auf dem Weg durch das verlassene deutsche Hinterland erreichen sie einen menschenleeren Bauernhof, wo sie den Luftkampf zwischen zwei britischen und einem deutschen Flugzeug beobachten. Das deutsche Flugzeug wird abgeschossen und stürzt unmittelbar in das Hoftor. Blake und Schofield retten den feindlichen Piloten aus dem brennenden Wrack. Während Schofield ihm Wasser holt, greift der Flieger Blake mit einem Messer an. Schofield tötet ihn mit einem Kopfschuss, kann seinen Kameraden aber nicht mehr retten. Blake verblutet in seinen Armen, wobei Schofield ihm verspricht, die Mission alleine abzuschließen und Blakes Bruder vor der Falle der Deutschen zu bewahren. Nachdem er zunächst von einer vorrückenden britischen Kompanie auf dem Mannschaftslastwagen mitgenommen wird, setzt er den Weg an einer für Fahrzeuge unpassierbaren Brücke allein fort. Dabei gerät er ins Visier eines deutschen Scharfschützen und wird beschossen. Es gelingt ihm, den Schützen in seinem Versteck aufzusuchen und zu töten. Dabei stürzt er von einer Treppe und bleibt mehrere Stunden bewusstlos liegen. Nachts muss er den zerstörten Ort Écoust durchqueren, wo sich noch deutsche Soldaten aufhalten. Auf der Flucht vor einem Wachposten versteckt er sich in einem Keller, wo er auf eine junge Französin trifft, die einen Säugling versorgt. Er schenkt der Frau seinen letzten Proviant und erhält von ihr eine Wegbeschreibung zu dem Wäldchen, wo er die Truppe von Colonel Mackenzie erreichen will. Er entkommt früh morgens aus dem Ort, stürzt dabei aber in einen reißenden Fluss und wird kilometerweit in den Wald hineingetragen, wo er völlig durchnässt auf die Nachhut Mackenzies trifft. Das Bataillon steht unmittelbar davor, die erste Welle des geplanten Angriffs zu starten, was Schofield nicht mehr verhindern kann. Im Chaos des Sturmangriffs rennt er teilweise ohne Deckung durch das Niemandsland und erreicht schließlich den Unterstand von Mackenzie. Nach anfänglicher Abweisung kann er den Colonel dazu bringen, den von ihm überbrachten Befehl zu lesen. Mackenzie entscheidet daraufhin, den Angriff abzubrechen. Anschließend erfährt Schofield, dass Blakes Bruder bei der ersten Welle des Angriffs war, und sucht ihn auf dem Verbandsplatz unter den Verwundeten. Schließlich trifft er Lieutenant Blake unverletzt dort an und kann ihm den Tod seines Bruders mitteilen und dessen persönliche Gegenstände übergeben. Widmung [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Der Film ist Sam Mendes’ Großvater Alfred Mendes gewidmet und basiert auf dessen Erzählungen über seine Erlebnisse als Meldeläufer zwischen 1916 und 1918. [2] [3] [4] Produktion [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Stab und Besetzung [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Regie führte der Oscarpreisträger Sam Mendes, der gemeinsam mit Krysty Wilson-Cairns auch das Drehbuch schrieb. Es handelt sich um Mendes’ erste Arbeit als Drehbuchautor [5] und um die zweite Zusammenarbeit mit Wilson-Cairns, die bereits das Drehbuch für The Voyeur’s Motel schrieb. Nach Jarhead – Willkommen im Dreck handelt es sich um den zweiten Kriegsfilm von Mendes. Als Produzent fungierte Steven Spielberg mit seiner Firma Amblin Partners. [6] Mendes produziert den Film zudem gemeinsam mit Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren und Callum McDougall. [7] Bei einer Vorstellung des Films in New York sagte Mendes zu seiner Inspiration, sein Großvater, ein Veteran des Ersten Weltkriegs, habe ihm als Kind Geschichten erzählt, und der Krieg, der Hunderttausende Menschenleben kostete, habe einen Schatten auf ganz Europa geworfen und tiefe Narben bei fast jeder Familie hinterlassen. Der Film versuche auf irgendeine Weise, den Opfern dieser verlorenen Generation Tribut zu zollen. Er fügte dem Film ein Zitat aus Erich Maria Remarques Roman Im Westen nichts Neues hinzu, der den Horror dieses brutalen Krieges deutlich machen will, in dem es heißt: „Wir haben so viel zu sagen, und wir werden es niemals sagen. “ [8] Ende März 2019 wurde die Besetzung von Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott und einer Reihe weiterer Schauspieler bekannt. George MacKay und Dean-Charles Chapman übernahmen die Rollen von Soldaten. In weiteren Rollen sind Richard Madden, Mark Strong, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Jamie Parker, Nabhaan Rizwan, Claire Duburcq und Colin Firth zu sehen. [7] Dreharbeiten und Filmaufbau [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Gedreht wurde unter anderem an den Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow Die Dreharbeiten wurden Anfang April 2019 begonnen [9] und fanden in England (darunter in der Salisbury Plain und am Low Force) und Schottland statt. [7] Dort drehte man an den Govan Graving Docks in Glasgow. [10] Als Kameramann fungierte Roger Deakins. Der Regisseur wollte, dass sich die Geschichte, die sich nur über 110 Minuten erstreckt, was der Laufzeit des Films entspricht, in Echtzeit abspielt. Daher wurde der Film so gedreht, dass er wie zwei ununterbrochene Shots wirkt, getrennt durch eine mehrstündige Bewusstlosigkeit der Hauptfigur Schofield. Anders als Victoria wurden die zwei Teile von 1917 aber nicht tatsächlich nonstop gedreht, so epd Film. Stattdessen wurden mehrere Szenen an verschiedenen Schauplätzen in zahllosen Probeläufen so lange durchgespielt, bis sie genau choreographiert aufgenommen und dann nahtlos aneinandergehängt werden konnten. [11] Man habe entschieden, so Deakins, den Großteil des Films unter einer Wolkendecke zu drehen, um eine visuelle Kontinuität zu wahren und den Eindruck eines ununterbrochenen Shots nicht zu zerstören. Am Set musste daher bei sonnigem Wetter darauf gewartet werden, dass Wolken aufziehen, bevor gedreht wurde. Während der Dreharbeiten arbeitete man mit zwei Drehbüchern, eines mit den Dialogen und Handlungspunkten und eines mit den Kamerabewegungen. [12] [13] Rüdiger Suchsland vom Filmdienst erklärt, auch wenn es keine erkennbaren Schnitte gebe, werde das Prinzip einer einzigen Kamera-Einstellung nicht komplett durchgehalten, wie sich in einigen „Sollbruchstellen“ wie Explosionen, wie Reißschwenks und Schwarzblenden zeige. Zudem breche Mendes den in der ersten Filmhälfte sehr konsequenten Naturalismus der Chronologie im zweiten Teil mehrfach, indem er die Nacht in Sekunden zum hellen Tag werden lässt, oder ein offenkundig kilometerweiter Weg in Minutenlänge zurückgelegt wird. Mitunter ähnele 1917 darin dramaturgisch einem Computerspiel, so Suchsland. Dann wieder öffne sich der Film in expressiven, betont künstlich wirkenden Szenen hin zum Poetischen. Als Spielfilm um den Ersten Weltkriegs sei dieser Film ein Solitär, und seine Haltung zum Krieg sei von den bekannten Mustern gleich weit entfernt: „Nicht Stahlgewitter, nicht Verklärung des Kriegs zur inneren Erlebnissteigerung, aber auch nicht Im Westen nichts Neues - Pazifismus findet sich hier. Mendes zeigt das Grauen des Krieges, zeigt ekelerregende Erlebnisse wie den Griff in die offene Wunde eines Toten, Tiere, die an Leichen knabbern. “ [14] So wollte Mendes erreichen, dass man als Zuschauer ganz unmittelbar dabei ist, wenn sich diese beiden jungen Männer durch ein weitläufiges Panorama aus Bergen von Leichen, Kriegsschrott und Trümmern zu ihren Kameraden durchkämpfen und man in einer einzigen Einstellung ohne Schnitt mit ihnen verbunden ist. [11] Filmmusik und Sound [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Die Filmmusik wurde von Thomas Newman komponiert. Der Soundtrack, der insgesamt 19 Musikstücke umfasst, wurde am 20. In Deutschland und der Schweiz erhielt 1917 von der FSK eine Freigabe ab 12 Jahren. In der Freigabebegründung heißt es, die eindringliche Inszenierung ziehe den Zuschauer ins Geschehen hinein und lasse ihn mit den realitätsnah gezeichneten Protagonisten diverse bedrohliche und gewalthaltige Situationen erleben, wobei die Gewalt nie verharmlost oder gar verherrlicht werde. Die düstere Grundstimmung sowie einige dramatische, auch brutale Szenen könnten Kinder unter 12 Jahren emotional überfordern und verängstigen. [26] Kritiken und Einspielergebnis [ Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten] Der Film konnte bislang 90 Prozent aller Kritiker bei Rotten Tomatoes überzeugen und erhielt hierbei eine durchschnittliche Bewertung von 8, 6 der möglichen 10 Punkte. [27] Michael Ranze von der Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater schreibt, Sam Mendes habe die One-Shot-Einstellung perfektioniert, und dadurch, dass die Figuren ständig in Bewegung sind, erscheine die Landschaft wie ein endloser Hintergrund, was dem Auge keine Ruhe lasse. Maßgeblichen Anteil an diesen Bildern hätte auch die perfekt gestaltete Ausstattung, von den langen Schützengräben bis zu den unterirdischen Wohnräumen der Deutschen, vom verwüsteten Schlachtfeld bis zum einsam dastehenden, kahlen Baum, der an Filme von Tarkowski oder Angelopoulos erinnere. [28] Anke Sterneborg von epd Film schreibt, mit unaufdringlicher Eleganz und atemraubender Leichtigkeit gleite, rase und fliege der Blick mal ganz nah vor oder hinter den Soldaten, mal weit von ihnen entfernt über die Weite der Landschaft, mal angespannt langsam, mal gehetzt rasant durch die Szenerien. Ohne das Vertrauen, das zwischen Kameramann Roger Deakins und Mendes in vielen gemeinsamen Filmen gewachsen ist, wäre diese völlig schwerelos anmutende und zugleich völlig unprätentiöse Virtuosität der Kameraarbeit nicht denkbar, so Sterneborg. Zusammen mit den überzeugenden jungen Darstellern Dean-Charles Chapman und George MacKay ermögliche der Film einen ganz modernen Blick auf diesen seit hundert Jahren beendeten Krieg. [11] Martin Schwickert bewertet in der Rheinischen Post den Film mit „sehr gut“ und meint über den Regisseur: „Mit George MacKay hat er einen wunderbaren Hauptdarsteller gefunden, der mit großer Glaubwürdigkeit durch die Hölle des Krieges geht und während der zwei Kinostunden um Jahre zu altern scheint. Schon jetzt kann „1917“ als Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte gelten, weil er ein klares Konzept mit großer handwerklicher Präzision zu einem ergreifenden Seherlebnis ausbaut. “ [29] Zu Mendes' Entscheidung seine Geschichte als „One-Shot-Movie“ und der subjektiven Perspektive der beiden Hauptfiguren zu erzählen, bemerkt Rüdiger Suchsland, dies mache die Handlung enorm spannend, die von immer neuen aus dem Nichts kommenden Überraschungen und Wendungen geprägt ist. Ähnlich wie in Filmen wie Das Boot oder Der schmale Grat werde der Krieg hier zu einer ästhetischen Erfahrung, in der Körperliches, lose, unverbundene Eindrücke und sinnliche Gewissheiten im Zentrum stehen und nicht „das große Ganze“, nicht Moral und Sinnfragen, so Suchsland. Zugleich aber habe das formale Verfahren paradoxe Folgen für das innerliche Involviertsein des Zuschauers: „In die direkte Sinnlichkeit mischt sich eine ebenso grundsätzliche Distanz. “ Der Filmkritiker resümiert, 1917 sei weit mehr als eine respektheischende Leistung von erstaunlicher technischer Athletik, sondern ein menschlicher Film, der differenziert von unmittelbarer Humanität erzählt. [14] Die weltweiten Einnahmen des Films aus Kinovorführungen belaufen sich auf rund 368 Millionen US-Dollar. [30] In Deutschland verzeichnet er 932. 496 Besucher. 1917 is one of better war films of recent years even if it doesnt have a lot of fighting and war ascepts until the end,i would compare this film to dunkirk they both have similiar way to tell story and both films focused more on characters arcs and their journey through hard years and expereicing them,this film has one of best musical scores of year and it dominates scenes and builds them with tension and even despair,also this film is really visually great to look at but that was expected since deakins was cinematographer and his way of filming was very good made and it was used well,my only gripe was the same like in dunkirk that we didnt learned a lot about characters and they felt unexplored,1917 is defienetly one of better films of 2019.

Written and directed by Sam Mendes, this riveting movie has immense meaning because it was actually inspired by Sam Mendes’ own grandfather’s experiences in WWI and based on his book Autobiography Of Alfred H. Mendes, 1897-1991 (The UWI Press Biography Series) and the movie was made in his memory. TIPS FOR PARENTS: Some profanity and F-bombs. You see dead horses and bodies (all prosthetic, of course), complete with circling flies, rats, and black crows. You see a man’s life blood drain from his face. Spoken French with subtitles You see a man kill another man with his hands like in that devastating scene in Saving Private Ryan. That scene has haunted me for years. THINGS I LIKED: Fantastic cinematography by 14 times Academy Award nominee Roger Deakins. Surely the work he does in this movie will win him an Oscar. I loved the long sequences in the beginning of 1917 when they walked through the trenches. The entire film is shot and edited to make it look like one long, single shot that takes place in real time. Wow. Seriously, the camera work is next level. For example, the camera keeps running from the ground level, water level, and over the shoulder in incredibly realistic shots that make you feel like you’re standing right next to the characters in the middle of all the action. The cast is very good and includes excellent performances by George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Scott, and Richard Madden. Some salty humor provided by Andrew Scott’s character. It’s the only time the audience I sat with laughed. The music provides a feeling of non-stop tension yet doesn’t become monotonous. How they prepared the fields and landscapes to really look like war-torn Europe was truly amazing. I loved how Blake hurt his hand on barbed wire at the very beginning of his journey so that he had to continue babying it amidst his struggles. For a truly visceral experience, watch this movie on the biggest screen you can. I loved the way the movie began and ended. Perfect. Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2020 Format: DVD As "1917" (2019 release; 119 min. ) opens, we are told it is "April 6, 1917", and Lance Corporals Schofield and Blake from the British army are summoned by the General: the two soldiers must deliver an urgent message to 2 battalions who are about to fall into a massive German trap. Blake's brother is among the 1600 soldiers in peril. Off they go, Schofield and Blake. At this point we are less than 10 min. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out. Couple of comments: this is the latest movie from British director-writer-producer Sam Mendes, who brought us the 2 most recent James Bond films, and American Beauty way before that. Here he brings a WWI story to the big screen as it was relayed to him by his grandfather, who served in WWI. I don't want to spoil anything by revealing more of the plot. Instead let me make the following general observations: as the movie opens, we watch as Schofield and Blake walk to the General's camp, get his orders, and get underway, and after a couple of minutes, I realized that all if this was being shown in one continuous take. Then it became 5 min., then 10, then 15 min., and I thought to myself, how much longer can this be just one continuous take? (Sorry, I'm going to to tell you. ) The movie is just epic on so many levels. There are some stretches where there is little to no dialogue and it is then how critically important the movie's sound design is. You may recall that in 2018 there was a fabulous documentary called "They Shall Not Grow Old" (directed by Peter Jackson), in which WWI archive footage is restored gloriously. And in 2017 there was Christopher Nolan's epic WWII drama "Dunkirk". To me "1917" recalls both those films in the best possible way. Kudos also to Thomas Newman for the massive original score, which plays almost non-stop during the movie. "1917" went wide this weekend, and i couldn't wait to see it. The Friday evening screening where I saw this at here in Cincinnati in a mid-size theater was pretty much sold out, I am very happy to say. Winning Best Picture and Best Director at last weekend's Golden Globes will only reinforce the strong word-of-mouth this movie surely will generate. I am going on record that this movie will get multiple Oscar nominations (and then win them). The few critically acclaimed Great War movies, such as All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) and Sergeant York (1941), were joined in 2018 by Peter Jackson’s documentary They Shall Not Grow Old. On Christmas Day, that list will get a new addition, in the form of Sam Mendes’ new film 1917. The main characters are not based on real individuals, but real people and events inspired the movie, which takes place on the day of April 6, 1917. The real man who inspired the film The 1917 script, written by Mendes and Krysty Wilson-Cairns, is inspired by “fragments” of stories from Mendes’ grandfather, who served as a “runner” — a messenger for the British on the Western Front. But the film is not about actual events that happened to Lance Corporal Alfred H. Mendes, a 5-ft. -4-inch 19-year-old who’d enlisted in the British Army earlier that year and later told his grandson stories of being gassed and wounded while sprinting across “No Man’s Land, ” the territory between the German and Allied trenches. In the film, General Erinmore (Colin Firth) orders two lance corporals, Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) and Schofield (George MacKay), to make the dangerous trek across No Man’s Land to deliver a handwritten note to a commanding officer Colonel Mackenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch), ordering them to cancel a planned attack on Germans who have retreated to the Hindenburg Line in northern France. Life in the trenches The filmmakers shot the film in southwestern England, where they dug about 2, 500 feet of trenches — a defining characteristic of the war’s Western Front — for the set. Paul Biddiss, the British Army veteran who served as the film’s military technical advisor and happens to have three relatives who served in World War I, taught the actors about proper techniques for salutes and handling weapons. He also used military instruction manuals from the era to create boot camps meant to give soldiers the real feeling of what it was like to serve, and read about life in the trenches in books like Max Arthur’s Lest We Forget: Forgotten Voices from 1914-1945, Richard van Emden’s The Last Fighting Tommy: The Life of Harry Patch, Last Veteran of the Trenches, 1898-2009 (written with Patch) and The Soldier’s War: The Great War through Veterans’ Eyes. He put the extras to work, giving each one of about three dozen tasks that were part of soldiers’ daily routines. Some attended to health issues, such as foot inspections and using a candle to kill lice, while some did trench maintenance, such as filling sandbags. Leisure activities included playing checkers or chess, using buttons as game pieces. There was a lot of waiting around, and Biddiss wanted the extras to capture the looks of “complete boredom. ” The real messengers of WWI The film’s plot centers on the two messengers sprinting across No Man’s Land to deliver a message, and that’s where the creative license comes in. In reality, such an order would have been too dangerous to assign. When runners were deployed, the risk of death by German sniper fire was so high that they were sent out in pairs. If something happened to one of them, then the other could finish the job. “In some places, No Man’s Land was as close as 15 yards, in others it was a mile away, ” says Doran Cart, Senior Curator at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City. The muddy terrain was littered with dead animals, dead humans, barbed wires and wreckage from exploding shells—scarcely any grass or trees in sight. “By 1917, you didn’t get out of your trench and go across No Man’s Land. Fire from artillery, machine guns and poison gas was too heavy; no one individual was going to get up and run across No Man’s Land and try to take the enemy. ” Human messengers like Blake and Schofield were only deployed in desperate situations, according to Cart. Messenger pigeons, signal lamps and flags, made up most of the battlefield communications. There was also a trench telephone for communications. “Most people understand that World War I is about trench warfare, but they don’t know that there was more than one trench, ” says Cart. “There was the front-line trench, where front-line troops would attack from or defend from; then behind that, kind of a holding line where they brought supplies up, troops waiting to go to to the front-line trench. ” The “bathroom” was in the latrine trench. There were about 35, 000 miles of trenches on the Western Front, all zigzagging, and the Western Front itself was 430 miles long, extending from the English Channel in the North to the Swiss Alps in the South. April 6, 1917 The story of 1917 takes place on April 6, and it’s partly inspired by events that had just ended on April 5. From Feb. 23 to April 5 of that year, the Germans were moving their troops to the Hindenburg Line and roughly along the Aisne River, around a 27-mile area from Arras to Bapaume, France. The significance of that move depends on whether you’re reading German or Allied accounts. The Germans saw it as an “adjustment” and “simply moving needed resources to the best location, ” while the Allies call the Germans’ actions a “retreat” or “withdrawal, ” according to Cart. In either case, a whole new phase of the war was about to begin, for a different reason: the Americans entered the war on April 6, 1917. A few days later, the Canadians captured Vimy Ridge, in a battle seen to mark “the birth of a nation” for Canada, as one of their generals put it. Further East, the Russian Revolution was also ramping up. As Matthew Naylor, President and CEO of the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., says of the state of affairs on the Western Front in April 1917, “Casualties on both sides are massive and there is no end in sight. ” Correction, Dec. 24 The original version of this article misstated how WWI soldiers de-loused themselves.
